June 2009 - ORB Featured in Newsnight’s MP’s Expenses Coverage
On Monday 1st June ORB focus groups formed the central part of Newsnight’s coverage of the MP’s expenses scandal.
In the lead story edited ‘highlights’ from our focus groups helped illustrate the public’s anger and concerns over the issue. Among the comments heard from participants were:
“Ultimately it’s hypocritical, they expect us to live by the straight and narrow and abide by laws and they are doing the exact opposite.”
“Make-up. Can’t they just fund their own mascara?”
“Paying the money back doesn’t solve the problem. If you walk out of the supermarket with a bag of sugar and you get caught and you offer the money back it doesn’t matter, you’ve done it.”
The focus groups were held in Watford on Sunday 31st May. They were recruited and conducted within a couple of days of commission and the material broadcast within 24 hours of the focus groups being concluded.
