July09 – Home Secretary’s immigration stance at odds with most constituents

A new poll conducted by ORB for Migrationwatch found that 78% of people in the Hull West and Hessle constituency disagree with Alan Johnson’s general attitude towards immigration and UK population growth. Meanwhile 80% believe that he is “out of touch” with people like them on these issues.

This is set amidst high levels of anxiety, with more than two thirds (69%) of Hull West and Hessle constituents saying they are concerned about reports that, over the next 20 years or so, the UK population will rise by more than 10 million (from 61 million today to over 70 million). In addition, 85% of constituents were concerned that 7 million of the 10 million increase could be as a result of immigration.

Other findings of the survey include:
- 83% of Hull West and Hessle constituents want to see net immigration reduced to 50,000 a year or less.
- Eight in ten constituents (80%) say immigration is putting too much strain on public services.
- Around three quarters (73%) are concerned that Britain is losing its own identity and culture as a result of immigration.

The results are from a telephone survey of 1,026 constituents living in West Hull and Hessle. Interviews were carried out between 17th and 21st July 2009 among adults aged 18+ who confirmed they lived in one of the seven wards in Hull West and Hessle constituency. Data are weighted to the adult profile of Hull West and Hessle by age, gender, working status and ward.
